Issue: Material is classified as 6.2 and contains 95% or more of substances in Chk: Classification 1-4 basic substance group

The material in question is classified as 6.2 – Adhesives, sealants; but contains more than 95% of substances in the Basic Substance Group Chk: Classification 1-4.¹

Per IMDS Recommendation 001a² –  6.2 includes materials being used as adhesives, bonding agents or adhesion promoters.  This classification also includes highly filled thermally or electrically conductive materials. The material should include only substance present in the final cured (end) state – dried and without solvents.

6.2 must not be used for solders or adhesives tapes which consist of several materials. Solders should be classified in one of the metal classifications 1.x, 2.x, 3.x, or 4.x. Adhesive tapes should be represented as individual materials grouped together under a semi-component.

You can check for the groups a substance belongs to by highlighting the substance in the tree structure.

Action Required:

Review the material composition and classification and revise as necessary.

If any of the substances listed in the material are process chemicals, review their presence carefully.  Process chemicals are chemicals used during manufacturing, that are not normally present in the end state material except in small amounts (typically 0.1% or less). Only substances present in the end state material should be entered in IMDS.  Substances that evaporate like solvents or those that react or cross link to form new substances should not be included in the MDS for the material.

Common Process chemicals are listed in the basic substance group Process Chemicals.  If process chemical substances remain in the end state material, be sure to answer the Chemical Presence question for each substance to explain why they are present.

¹ You can find the substances included in a basic substance group by searching for the group members in the substance search in IMDS.
